چکیده

We analyze the growth stability of an epitaxial strained film on a flat substrate by the elastic Green’s function force monopole approach. We calculate and compare the strain energies and growth instability of three different forms of surface undulations: sinusoidal waviness, surface faceting and island formation. In general, the instability occurs beyond a critical length scale, in agreement with the conventional analysis of ATG instability based on the stress function approach. For isotropic surface energies, the critical length scale for the island formation is the smallest, because it offers the most effective mode of strain relaxation.

Dynamic and Static Pull-in instability of electrostatically actuated nano/micro membranes under the effects of Casimir force and squeezed film damping

In the current study, the effects of Casimir force and squeeze film damping on pull-in instability and dynamic behavior of electrostatically actuated nano and micro electromechanical systems are investigated separately. Linear elastic membrane theory is used to model the static and dynamic behavior of the system for strip, annular and disk geometries. Squeeze film damping is modeled using nonli...

Computation of strained epitaxial growth in three dimensions by kinetic Monte Carlo

A numerical method for computation of heteroepitaxial growth in the presence of strain is presented. The model used is based on a solid-on-solid model with a cubic lattice. Elastic effects are incorporated using a ball and spring type model. The growing film is evolved using kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) and it is assumed that the film is in mechanical equilibrium. The force field in the substrate ...

Linear stability analysis for step meandering instabilities with elastic interactions and Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers.

Vicinal surfaces are known to exhibit morphological instabilities during step-flow growth. Through a linear stability analysis of step meandering instabilities, we investigate two effects that are important in many heteroepitaxial systems: elastic monopole-monopole interactions arising from bulk stress and the Ehrlich-Schwoebel (ES) barriers due to the asymmetric adatom incorporation rates. The...

Perturbative Approach to Calculating the Correlation Function of bi-isotropic Metamaterials

A bi-isotropic magneto-electric metamaterials is modeled by two independent reservoirs. The reservoirs contain a continuum of three dimensional harmonic oscillators, which describe polarizability and magnetizability of the medium. The paper aimed to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field on bi-isotropic. Starting with a total Lagrangian and using Euler-Lagrange equation, researcher cou...

Enhanced growth instability of strained film on wavy substrate

We demonstrate that the growth of a strained film is inherently less stable on a wavy substrate than on a flat substrate. For small surface undulation, the lowest strain energy state is for the film surface to adopt the same wavelength as the substrate surface in an antiphase configuration at the early stage of growth. The critical wavelength c of growth instability on a wavy substrate is half ...
